Encyclopaedia WoT

Robert Jordan's epic Wheel of Time series will span 12 volumes when all is said and done. Along the way, Jordan's stories have spawned hundreds of major and minor characters and seemingly just as many subplots. It's a lot for even die-hard fans to keep track of, but fortunately the Encyclopaedia WoT is attempting to do exactly that.

The fan project offers chapter summaries of the first 11 books in the series. This is useful, but what's even better is that they provide a color-coded graphical timeline that illustrates when each major plot occurred. For example, in the first book—Eye of the World—it shows that the "Two Rivers Folk" plot runs from chapter 1 to 20 before splitting into three separate paths for Rand and Mat, Eqwene and Perrin, and Nynaeve, Moiraine and Lan for chapters 20-41. They then rejoin for the final chapters, 41-53. It's a great aid, one I'd love to see replicated in fan sites for other long-running fantasy or science-fiction series.

In addition to a summary, each chapter also has behind-the-scenes notes offering deeper insights into what's really going on. These notes comment on how the chapter ties into other events in the story, clarify confusing points and link to frequently asked questions pages elsewhere on the site.

In addition to the chapter summaries, the Web site offers overviews of important concepts in the Wheel of Time universe, such as the Wheel of Time itself, the True Source (which powers the setting's arcane abilities), organizations, monsters, character lists and comprehensive listing of prophecies.

The site also dedicates a page to the final book in the series, Memory of Light, which is being written by Brandon Sanderson based on a partial manuscript and extensive notes that Robert Jordan gave him before his untimely death. Sanderson has a progress bar for the project on his blog, and Encyclopaedia WoT has graphed those updates onto a chart that offers their best guess as to when the book might be finished.
