Forbidden Planet Blog

September 10, 2008 12:00 AM

The chain of bookstores known as Forbidden Planet has a long and illustrious history in the SF field. In existence for nearly three decades after its start in the United Kingdom, roughly 30 stores big, the company has been a major supporter of and advocate for the imaginative genres, making thousands of customers and authors very happy as they've purveyed goods ranging from books and comics to the many tchotchkes of our field.

With the addition of a "Blog Log" to their main website, the firm now provides much original material of value as well. They've gone from hosting authors to being authors.

Many of the newest entries have been posted on Forbidden Planet by Joe Gordon, the only person listed under the "Contact Us" button, and by Richard Bruton, whose byline is hotlinked to his own solo website. But it would help to have little bios for the contributors right at this page, to establish their personalities and credentials. But other than that, there's nothing to complain about. These posters are literate, funny, savvy and generous. They offer full-scale reviews, news and commentary on a sea of items, from films to comics to books to TV shows to toys. There's enjoyable mild snark, such as the piece about one actress's excessive praise of her own chest. And with thousands of archived posts on Forbidden Planet, you can spend hours reading.

Equally worthy is the roll call of hundreds of other relevant sites. Start surfing here, and you may never return!
