Animated Sci Fi 'Igor'

Malaria doesn't sound like a great place to live, but in the upcoming animated film Igor, the gloomy, always-cloudy hamlet is a metropolis thriving with mad scientists and their horrid henchmen. Every year, Malaria hosts the Evil Science Fair, which draws the world's most despicable from far and wide to compete for fame, fortune and fawning. Through the course of the movie, we learn all men aren't created evil after Dr. Glickerman's (voice of John Cleese) shy assistant Igor (John Cusack) is forced to step up and take his master's place in the big contest. The diminutive hunchback tries to create the Most Evil Woman from discount body parts, but she's just a big softie who insists that everyone call her Eva (voiced by Molly Shannon). Clearly, this won't do, and so Eva must be sent to a harm-school of sorts before the big contest begins. Although Igor is definitely a kids' science fiction adventure, Cusack told SCI FI Wire that he was attracted by the story's more twisted aspects. "I love Scamper," he said with a laugh, referring to the character of an "anti-Thumper" bunny rabbit (Steve Buscemi). The sidekick was built to be indestructible and therefore "he keeps trying to kill himself, but can't." This story continues below the image. igor Cusack said that he believes that both children and their parents will like the movie. "Tony [Leondis, the director,] seemed that he wanted to have it so kids could laugh at it, and then the adults could also have a couple of laughs," he said. "I mean, there's one line he says, 'If she's having woman problems, let me know.' And the kids are thinking, 'Oh, woman problems.' But then adults knew that that was something else. So there are a bunch of those double entendres there. I thought it was letting the audience, kids and adults, both enjoy it." Cusack also said that some kids will respond to Igor as a misfit, "in the rage of it," yet he agreed the film is at its heart a sweet story about friendship and acceptance--much along the lines of monster movies he himself enjoyed when he was growing up. "Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Mummy ... all those old Universal monsters," he said. MGM's Igor opens nationwide Sept. 19. --Staci Layne Wilson
